To know more about the Friars Minor of Umbria and their activities

The Seraphic Province of St. Francis of Umbria, that also includes the dependent Custody of the Friars Minor of Sardinia, is one of more than a hundred entities of the Order of Friars Minor located throughout the world.

The particular origin of this Province, as for all those in the Order of Friars Minor, dates back to the origins of the Poverello of Assisi that developed mainly around the Sanctuaries of San Damiano and the Portiuncola.

Today there are about 200 perpetually professed Friars in the Province and about 40 young men in formation. They live in 24 fraternities located throughout Umbria: from Città di Castello and Umbertide to Amelia and Terni, from Perugia to Spoleto, from Foligno to Todi.

Of particular relevance are several friaries in Assisi (the Portiuncola, San Damiano, the Hermitage of the Carceri, Chiesa Nuova and St. Clare) the places where the Franciscan and Clarian Orders originated.

For about ten years the Friars Minor of Umbria have been present in a friary in Nice, and since 2011 the Friars Minor of Sardinia have become a Custody dependent on the Seraphic Province of Umbria.

The first priority of the provincial Fraternity is the care of the SANCTUARIES that preserve the memory of the Franciscan origins (to know more, visit the sites for the Sanctuaries of Assisi).

In addition to this mission, the Friars also carry out the more traditional activities of evangelization:

  • the PARISHES,
  • CHAPLAINCIES IN HOSPITALS AND PRISONS,
  • CHRISTIAN FORMATION
  • MISSIONS, both POPULAR and FOREIGN.

Finally, the Friars Minor are also involved in new forms of reaching out to the men and women of our times, going out to where they live, to serve the family, youth and university students (to see more, check the areas listed on the side of the page: Youth, Culture and Hospitality).
